Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What are "Stunt" events?
A: On listed days until the end of 2009 we will offer "Stunts" where the longest winning streak accumulated for that particular day will win the Stunt prize. At the beginning of Stunt days not all matchups may be posted and new matchups could be added as the day continues. In most cases matchups will be posted at least one hour before the displayed locktime but note that locktimes are subject to change. The longest winning streak at the end of the day - whether it's current or not - will win the $5,000 cash prize. Q: How does the Stunt leaderboard work? A: Stunt leaderboards calculate the matchups played only from that particular day. If you start the day with a streak of "W5" and win the first prop you're overall streak will continue to "W6", but your streak for the Stunt will be "W1". As such there is no advantage having a long streak going into the Stunt event- all entries start from 0. Q: Are current streaks and monthly wins in play during Stunt events? A: Yes. During Stunts the "regular" game is in-play, but any continued streak does NOT count towards the Stunt leaderboard. If you start the day with a streak of "W5" and win the first prop of the Stunt your overall streak will go to "W6", but your streak for the day will be "W1". Conversely if you lose it'll go to "L1". All matchups played during Stunts will count towards the Most Wins Monthly Prize. Q: Can I make more than one pick at a time? A: No. The game is designed so you can only make one pick at a time. This gives you the challenge to come back after each pick is final and make another. Note that even if you have a matchup picked you can still change it as long as the matchup hasn't started yet. Q: Can I make more than one pick per day? A: Yes! There is no limit to the number of picks you can make each day. After the matchup you've selected goes final you can make a pick for any pick which hasn't started yet. If you time them right on some days it will be possible to make a pick for up to 4 or even 5 matchups. Q: If my pick ends in a PUSH is my streak reset back to 0? A: No! Any matchup that goes final with a PUSH result is scored as if the event didn't happen. Q: What's the longest streak on record so far? A: You can view the Longest Streaks Leaderboard which displays the longest historic streak recorded in the game (whether they're active streaks or not). Q: Can I play the game on my mobile phone? A: Yes! The displays are different but the game is the same so you can make your picks on the go. View the Mobile Streak page. Verizon Wireless users can play on ESPN MVP and everyone can play the game on ESPN Mobile Web. Q: What reasoning goes into which matchups are selected? A: Most matchups will be selected based on a) event start time, b) winning probability (to not select any one-sided matchups), c) how much interest we think the matchup will produce and d) if the event is being televised on any of the ESPN TV networks. Each day we'll first look at the USA sports schedule and fill in as many possible time slots to complete the schedule. Then as needed we'll look at World sporting events (especially Euro soccer) and try to maximize the number of matchups per day. Q: Why do some of the matchups have the question part and some don't? A: The matchups which appear with the questions are considered "props", while the ones that don't are "straight up". Props are manually entered by the Game Admin and can either be used to add a matchup around a specific event, or be used to include an event which we do not have an automated feed for. Props also allow us to get creative in matching up two completely different or unrelated sets of results (ie "Cole Hamel Pitch Count" vs. "Points scored by Philadelphia 76ers"). Straight up matchups are between two teams and you're asked to simply pick who will win the game. Prop can require a bit more thought and research in determining the winner. Regardless of picking a "prop" or "straight up" matchup the end result for you is the same - either a win or a loss. Q: How many matchups will be on the board each day? A: It depends on the sporting schedule around the world. There is no fixed limit to how many or how few each day. We'll try to offer matchups at as many different time intervals as possible to maximize game play. Some days we could have up to 20, while others we'll only offer 5. Q: Will new matchups be added during the day? Updated: 3/09/09 A: Yes. Any matchup can be entered six (6) hours prior to the matchups start time. In most cases the matchups you see at midnight ET will be all that are included for the next day but note we might add one or two late night or early morning. Q: Can a matchup be pulled off the board after I've picked it? A: Yes, matchups can be removed from the board or set as OFF at anytime. There are a number of different circumstances which can lead this happening. The most common are weather delays where the Game Admin decides the matchup is better off not played. This is done to ensure your matchup is not locked overnight, or blocks a significant amount of the picks for the current day. In most cases this will not happen after a significant amount of time has taken place, or the outcome is mostly already decided. Matchups can also be pulled off the board if a significant change in the winning probability is determined. An example of this can be player injuries or suspensions which are announced day of the event. An example of this was seen in our "Josh Beckett Strikeouts vs. All Blue Jays Strikeouts" prop. In this case it was announced around 5PM ET that Beckett would not make the start for the 7PM ET game. When we learned this the matchup was immediately set to OFF so people could make picks for other matchups that evening. Q: Does the game offer groups so I can compete against my friends? A: Yes. 2009's verison of Streak now allows users to create and join groups. Hover over the "My Groups+" tab to create a group or join one via the Group Directory. Q: Does the game count towards my points in the Uber Challenge? A: Yes! Your longest streak will be scored against all the other entries playing in the game and that percentage rank will determine how many Uber points you're awarded. Streak is Category B on the Uber schedule. Q: How are Soccer "total points" matchups scored? A: There are many types of soccer matches added to our game. In tournament format matches e.g. The English Carling Cup, there are no "draws" therefore there must be a winner. In this case, overtime goals count towards the Streak score because the match cannot end in a tie (unless noted on the frontpage), but if the match goes penalty kicks, those do NOT. In other leagues, e.g. The UEFA Champions League, teams play two matches against their specific opponent, also known as an aggregate matchup. If match two of a specific aggregate is added to our board, the time allowed in our "total points" matchup is for this specific match, which is only 90 minutes plus extra time. If the aggregate score is tied after this completed match, the two teams continue to play until someone scores, which will advance them to the next round. |
